Gymnast Carlos Edriel Yulo made history when he emerged as the first Filipino world champion at the 2019 World Artistic Gymnastics Championships last Saturday (October 12) in Stuttgart, Germany.

Yulo ruled the men’s floor exercise with a score of 15.300, beating Israel’s Artem Dolgopyat who scored 15.200, and China’s Ruoteng Xiao who got 14.933. Dolgopyat and Xiao placed 2nd and 3rd place, respectively.

Last Tuesday, the 19-year-old gymnast qualified for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics after turning in high scores on the vault and parallel bars.

Last year, he also became the first Filipino to land on the podium at the World Artistic Gymnastics Championships held in Doha, Qatar where he placed third in the same event.

This December, Carlos Edriel Yulo will compete at the 2019 Southeast Asian Games to be held at the Rizal Memorial Sports Complex from Dec. 1 to 9.
